Project name
Reading Power for child health (Taalkracht voor consultatiebureaus)

Brief description
Child health centres are visited by virtually all young parents, including low-literate parents. Child health centres are used to giving educational advice to parents. As a result, child health centres can play an important role in recognising low literacy and in referring low-literate parents to courses in reading and writing. To enable physicians and nursing staff of child health centres to recognize low literacy in parents, the Reading & Writing Foundation, in collaboration with other organisations, has developed an information package and organises meetings on the recognition and referral of low literacy.

Objectives

  • Children's healthcare centres should become a permanent channel to approach parents on the development of language sensitivity
  • Raising awareness in doctors and nursing staff of children's healthcare centres of the effect and scope of low literacy and address them in their role as conductor
  • Raise awareness in parents of the importance of reading (to the child)
