Project name
Reading Power! (Taalkr8!)

Short description
Reading Power! enables vocational school pupils to handle language in an appealing and creative manner. By attending workshops especially designed for this day and presented by their own teachers, specialists from outside the school or employees from a local library, pupils realise that language is not only fun, but also important. A few examples of workshops are: writing poetry, advertising texts and opera soaps. Reading Power! does not only show pupils the importance of language, but also stimulates teachers to take a closer look at the language policy in their school and to actively improve it.

Objectives

  • Make young people aware that a good command of language is essential for a brighter future;
  • Make young people see that language is also something really great and challenging;
  • Encourage schools to put their language policy high at the agenda, and improve this where possible and where necessary, with or without the help of educational advisory services.

Partners
Kennisnet, various educational advisory bodies and the Netherlands Public Library Association (VOB).

Milestones

  • Pilots in Delft and Purmerend in 2005 and 2006

  • 29 Reading Power! days in 2008
