Born in the US and raised in Germany, Eric Merkel-Sobotta settled in Amsterdam in 2002, after having lived for 15 years in Brussels. He studied Political Science and German Language and Literature at George Washington University in Washington DC. Following that, he worked for a German Foundation in Washington and then studied at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium (1989: MA in European Studies). In Brussels, he worked for the American Chamber of Commerce. In 1993 he was appointed Director European Affairs for UPS and, in 1998, Director of APCO Europe (a communications consultancy). He then became Director Corporate Relations at Reed Elsevier. Now, he is Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications at Springer Science & Business Media.
